The short answer

Pick PioSolver if you want to run your own solves on a Windows PC and own the software: a Pro license costs €300 once, plus tax. Pick GTO Wizard if you’d rather study solved spots in a browser, from $49 a month per Hold’em format, and have its AI solve spots you set up from Elite at $169 a month.

If you’re still learning the game, you don’t need either yet: Poker Skill, which we make, deals full hands against AI opponents in Practice vs AI and teaches Hold’em in lessons, in a free app.

Side by side

Both solve poker spots and both have a free version. One is a program you own and run, the other a service you subscribe to.

Who should pick PioSolver

PioSolver suits you if you want a solver of your own: you set both ranges, the stacks and the bet sizes, lock nodes to test an opponent’s habits and queue solves to run overnight. It suits a player who studies heads-up Hold’em spots in depth and has a strong Windows computer, since a bigger tree takes more time and memory. Edge’s preflop solver wants at least 64 GB. If your computer isn’t up to it, PioSolver’s separate PioCloud service solves trees in the cloud, paid in credits at €1 each, with a viewer that also works on a phone.

Who should pick GTO Wizard

GTO Wizard suits you if you want answers more than a tool: a library of solved spots to study from the first day, a Trainer and an analyzer for your own hands, all in a browser. Its AI solves custom spots on Elite and Ultra in the same browser app, and it covers PLO4 and multiway spots, which PioSolver doesn’t.

If you’re still learning the game

A solver answers a spot you can already describe in ranges and bet sizes, which is a long way past learning the game. If you’re not there yet, Poker Skill, which we make, deals full hands against AI opponents in Practice vs AI and teaches hand rankings, position and betting in lessons, free on iPhone and Android. We also publish free solver answers for heads-up pots, each with the why in plain words. Trainer vs solver explains when a solver starts to pay off.

PioSolver and GTO Wizard in detail

PioSolver

A desktop solver you own

€300 once, plus tax, for Pro on one computer; Edge from €550

Best for Players who want to build their own heads-up spots, run long solves on their own hardware and keep the software for good.

Skip if You want solved spots ready to browse, you study PLO or multiway pots, or you'd rather not set up every spot yourself.

Free version A free version with Pro's speed that solves only example flops, for testing.

Where it runs Windows; a Mac through Parallels

PioSolver solves heads-up Hold'em spots you define: both players' ranges, the pot, the stacks and the bet sizes. Pro covers flop, turn and river spots with a built-in trainer, node locking, aggregation reports and a job queue that solves trees while you're away. Edge adds a heads-up preflop solver, which wants at least 64 GB of memory. The license is yours for life, with a year of updates included and a support extension at half the license price after that.

PioSolver's node locking window on its documentation site: a four, three, two flop after a check at the root, an action bar from a bet of 180 down to check, a 13 by 13 hand grid shaded by strategy, a slider for each action and strategy boxes for four ace-seven hands.
Notice the sliders on the right: node locking lets you set a strategy yourself and solve the response to it.

Compared with Poker Skill: PioSolver is the pick for solving your own spots on a Windows PC, while Poker Skill teaches Hold'em and deals coached hands on iPhone and Android without solving spots.

GTO Wizard

Solved spots and AI solving in a browser

$49 to $359 a month per Hold'em format; custom solving from Elite at $169; PLO4 is priced separately

Best for Players who want solved spots ready to study and, on Elite or Ultra, custom solves without running a solver of their own.

Skip if You'd rather pay once than every month, or you want to run long jobs offline on your own computer.

Free version A free plan with 100 preflop solutions, 1 postflop solution and 10 Trainer hands a day, plus solver trials on preflop spots up to 10 big blinds and on one example flop.

Where it runs A web browser, on any computer

GTO Wizard keeps a library of solved spots for cash games, tournaments and PLO4, with a Trainer, flop and turn reports from Premium and an analyzer for your uploaded hand histories. Its own solver, GTO Wizard AI, handles custom spots: Elite solves heads-up spots you set up, with nodelocking, and Ultra adds multiway preflop and 3-way postflop solves. Each game format is its own subscription.

GTO Wizard homepage section headed The Best Poker Trainer in the World, on the slide Get Instant Feedback On Your Play. A session summary shows 54 hands, 66 moves and a GTO score of 56 percent, with counts of best moves, correct moves, inaccuracies, wrong moves and blunders beside a strategy grid.
Its Trainer ends a session with a GTO score and a count of moves in each grade, from best move down to blunder.

Compared with Poker Skill: GTO Wizard is the pick for solved spots and custom solves in a browser, while Poker Skill teaches the game those spots assume, on iPhone and Android.

Frequently asked questions

Is PioSolver better than GTO Wizard?

They're built for different jobs. PioSolver is the better pick for building and solving your own heads-up spots on a Windows PC and owning the software. GTO Wizard is the better pick for studying solved spots and running custom solves in a browser, with PLO4 and multiway solving that PioSolver doesn't offer.

How much does PioSolver cost?

Pro costs €300 for one computer or €450 for two, and Edge €550 or €800, once, plus tax. Each includes a year of updates, and a support extension costs half the license price. GTO Wizard is a subscription instead, from $49 a month, or $39 a month billed yearly.

Does PioSolver work on a Mac?

Not directly. PioSolver is a Windows program. Its makers say Mac users run it through Parallels or Boot Camp and suggest trying the free version first. GTO Wizard runs in any browser, Mac included.

Can GTO Wizard replace PioSolver?

For most study, yes: its library covers a wide range of stack depths and bet sizes, and Elite solves heads-up spots you set up, in a browser. PioSolver still suits players who want to own the solver, queue long solves on their own hardware and work offline.

Is there a free version of PioSolver?

Yes. The free version runs at Pro's speed but solves only example flops, so it's for testing the program and your computer. GTO Wizard's free plan lets you try its solver on preflop spots up to 10 big blinds and on one example flop.
