The four apps in detail

Poker Skill

Ours

Coached hands with a reason after every decision

Free forever. Plus optional

Best for Hold'em players who play for fun, already know the rules and want to know why a play wins.

Skip if You already study with a solver and want exact frequencies for a spot you set up. Or you play Omaha, since Poker Skill teaches Texas Hold'em only.

Free version Every lesson, the Daily Puzzle and one Practice vs AI game a day. Plus is the only purchase.

Where it runs iPhone, iPad and Android

In Practice vs AI you play full hands against AI opponents, heads-up or three-player, and Coach Max grades each decision against the strategy of Showdown AI, the engine behind the table. When you face a bet, he gives you the pot odds. The Daily Puzzle brings a new hand each day, and after you answer, every option shows its stars and your pick comes back with its reason. Nothing is played for real money, and there are no chips to buy.

Poker Skill result screen for a Daily Puzzle titled Ace-King Meets 7-6-5 and dated September 27, 2026. Three yellow stars sit above answer cards grading Check three stars, Bet 400 two stars and Bet 900 one star, with Check outlined in green as the pick. Under the heading Optimal Move, the reason reads that 7-6-5 fits the range that called better than yours, so your preflop edge is gone, and that checking keeps ace-high's chance to win unimproved. Tiles show 9 XP earned and a time of 1:28, above an offer to upgrade to Plus.
The reason under Optimal Move is the part that sticks: the board fits the range that called, so ace-king's edge from before the flop is gone.

PokerTrainer

Drills and a plan built on your weakest areas

Free paid plan $14.99 a month

Best for Players who keep making the same mistakes and want drills that bring their weak spots back until they stick.

Skip if You would rather learn by playing full hands with a coach than by drilling one spot type at a time.

Free version Free under a daily limit. The paid plan adds more volume and some training features.

Where it runs Web, iPhone, iPad and Android

PokerTrainer (pokertrainer.se) builds a training plan from your weakest areas and brings common mistakes back with spaced repetition. Its drills cover preflop, postflop, odds, equity and hand rankings, and a hand simulator plays full hands preflop or postflop. Since September its trainers explain why each answer is right or wrong.

PokerTrainer preflop exercise showing a six seat table, pot 1.5, the hero in the small blind holding queen and deuce of diamonds, fold, call and raise buttons beneath, and a running count of correct and incorrect answers.
The two counters under the buttons keep score of every preflop decision, which is where a weak spot first shows.

Compared with Poker Skill: PokerTrainer is the pick for drills aimed at your weakest areas, while Poker Skill coaches the decisions inside full hands you play.

DTO Poker

Tournament and cash spots, graded against GTO

Free paid plans from $9.99 a month

Best for Tournament players who study on their phone and want each hand graded against GTO.

Skip if You want lessons or a reason in plain words after each hand. DTO shows exact EV loss and frequencies only on its top plans.

Free version Every preflop solution, plus training in one postflop spot, with simplified solutions.

Where it runs iPhone and Android, with web trainers

DTO Poker grades each hand you play against GTO, drawn from over 100 million pre-solved tournament scenarios, and DTO Cash does the same for cash games. Each spot can be studied as a range and a strategy before you drill it. Subscribers get a Virtual Coach. There is no free trial.

DTO MTT App Store screenshot of three phone screens side by side. The outer screens show a range grid and a strategy breakdown under Range, Strategy and Drill tabs, and the middle screen shows a table spot with a pot of 9 and Check, Bet and All in buttons.
The Range, Strategy and Drill tabs let you study a spot before you are graded on it.

Compared with Poker Skill: DTO Poker is the one for graded tournament spots on a phone, while Poker Skill explains each decision in plain words and gives free players one Practice vs AI game a day.

GTO Wizard

Solver drills for any spot, in a browser

$49 a month for the Starter cash plan

Best for Players who already think in ranges and frequencies and want to drill the exact spot they choose.

Skip if You are still fixing which hands you play and how position changes them. Or you want a study app from the App Store or Google Play, since GTO Wizard's study tools run in a browser.

Free version 10 practice hands a day, 100 preflop solutions and 1 postflop solution.

Where it runs Web browser, mobile friendly

GTO Wizard lets you study any spot from preflop to river, with instant GTO and EV feedback on each decision, from a library of solutions built by its own solver, GTO Wizard AI. The Starter cash plan is $49 a month, or $39 a month billed yearly. There is no free trial, and it offers a 7-day refund.

GTO Wizard homepage section headed The Best Poker Trainer in the World, on the slide Get Instant Feedback On Your Play. A session summary shows 54 hands, 66 moves and a GTO score of 56 percent, with counts of best moves, correct moves, inaccuracies, wrong moves and blunders beside a strategy grid.
A session ends with a GTO score and a count of moves in each grade, from best move down to blunder.

Compared with Poker Skill: GTO Wizard is the pick once you study with a solver, while Poker Skill teaches the decisions that come before solver study, free.

Which mistake are you trying to fix?

Getting better at poker means fixing the decision you get wrong most often: which hands you play, how position changes them or whether a call is priced right by the pot odds. Find yours in the left column.

To find that mistake in your own hands and build a practice plan around it, read how to get better at poker. Once you think in ranges, trainer vs solver covers when solver study starts to pay. To see how Poker Skill’s coached hands work, start with the poker training app page.

Where Poker Skill falls short

Poker Skill teaches Texas Hold’em only, so an Omaha player should look at GTO Wizard. Coach Max grades a decision and says why, but the app doesn’t show the exact mix of plays a solver would choose. Nothing in it yet tracks which concepts you miss over time, and free players get one Practice vs AI game a day. If you want a plan built from your weakest areas, PokerTrainer has one today.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best app to get better at poker?

For most players who already know the rules, Poker Skill: you play hands against AI opponents and solve a Daily Puzzle, and every decision comes back with why it was right or wrong. Poker Skill is free. Forever. We make it, so we also say who should pick PokerTrainer, DTO Poker or GTO Wizard instead.

What is the best app to improve at poker?

Poker Skill, if you want to improve for free: every lesson, the Daily Puzzle and one Practice vs AI game a day cost nothing, and Plus is optional. PokerTrainer's drills are free under a daily limit, DTO Poker gives every preflop solution free and GTO Wizard's free plan has 10 practice hands a day.

Do I need a solver to get better at poker?

Not at first. A solver shows the best play in a spot you set up, and that pays off once you think in ranges. Most players gain more from fixing which hands they play, their position and how they price a call. The trainer vs solver page covers when a solver starts to pay.
