What to drill first
Drill your first-in opens by position before anything else. Once you can recall which hands you open from each seat, move on to answering someone else’s open with a fold, a call or a 3-bet, and then to adjusting for the game and the players in it. Ranges also change with the stack depth, the number of players and the rake, so drill the preflop charts built for the game you play.
A chart tells you what to do in the exact spot it covers. The reason behind a hand, its strength and your position, is what lets you think through a spot the chart doesn’t show. Take king-ten offsuit.
On our six-handed opening range charts it folds under the gun and opens on the button. Poker Skill teaches it as an under-the-gun fold and gives the reason: from the first seat to act, the hand makes too many weak top pairs. With only the blinds left behind you on the button, the same hand is a raise.
