What pocket rockets means
Pocket rockets is table slang for pocket aces, a starting hand of two aces. The same hand also answers to rockets, to aces, and in older books to American Airlines. All four names point at the same two cards, and it is the strongest starting hand in Texas Hold’em.
Why aces sit at the top
No other starting hand is ahead of A-A before the flop. Starting-hand charts put it in the raise column from every seat, with no conditions attached, because no seat changes the answer.
Best starting hand is a statement about the moment the cards are dealt. It says nothing about the board that is coming.
How to play pocket rockets before the flop
Raise. Then raise again if someone raises you.
The temptation with aces is to disguise them by limping or flat-calling, in the hope that somebody with a weaker hand builds the pot for you. That trade is usually bad. Slowplaying means checking or calling with a strong hand to hide it, and it costs you money whenever the opponent would have paid a bet. Aces are the hand most likely to get paid, which makes them the hand least worth hiding.
Raising also does the second job: it thins the field. Aces are strongest against one opponent and get progressively less reliable as more players see a flop with you.
Where pocket rockets lose money
Unimproved aces are one pair. A hand that is one pair loses to two pair, to a straight, and to a flush, and a five-card board gives opponents plenty of ways to get there.
Concretely: you hold A-A, the board runs 9-8-7 with two of the same suit, and you fire three streets into a caller. The caller is rarely showing up with a worse one pair by the river. Bet the flop with confidence, then look at the turn and the river and ask what a caller is still holding.
Common mistakes with aces
- Limping or flat-calling to trap, and letting four players see a cheap flop.
- Treating aces as unfoldable on a board that has completed an obvious straight or flush.
- Playing them the same way in a raised multiway pot as heads up.
