What the joker is

A deck of playing cards ships with 52 cards plus a spare joker or two. Games that use a joker treat it as a wild card, a card that stands in for another one. Games that do not use it take it out of the deck before the first hand, and No-Limit Texas Hold’em is one of those games.

How to play the joker card

Wild does not always mean anything you want. In the draw games that deal a joker, its power is narrower than the name suggests: it plays as an ace, or it completes a straight, or it completes a flush, including a straight flush. Hold a joker with no draw and no ace in front of it and you are holding an ace, nothing more.

That narrow version is sometimes called the bug. Some home games and some casino draw games use the full wild version instead, where the joker becomes any card at all. Ask before the first hand, because the two rules produce very different hands.

What a joker does to the odds

Adding a joker changes every frequency you have memorised. Flushes come in more often, because one card can finish them. Open-ended straights complete more often, for the same reason. Hand types show up that a 52-card deck cannot produce at all. It also cuts the chance that an opponent is sitting on the hand you are worried about, because the extra card spreads the deck out.

The practical consequence: a strong hand in a joker game is not the same strength as the identical hand in a 52-card game. Trips are worth less. Flushes are worth less. Adjust down before you commit a stack.

Why Hold’em leaves the joker out

Flop games and stud games are usually dealt without a joker, so a Hold’em deck is exactly 52 cards. Every equity number, every out count, every pot-odds shortcut you learn for Hold’em assumes 52 cards and nothing wild. Nine outs to a flush is nine outs because the deck is fixed.
